EME operation canceled
The ''Big Dish'' earth-moon-earth operation from VE3ONT on the first
weekend of the ARRL EME Contest October 29 and 30 has been
preempted by professional use of the dish, which will be used by
radio astronomers participating in a worldwide supernova observation
experiment.
According to Michael Owen, W9IP, operators expect to have access to
the 46-meter dish for the second weekend of the 'Test, November 26
and 27, as previously announced. The November operation will be on
144 MHz on both days, transmitting on 144.100 and listening
144.100-144.110 from approximately 0538 to 1645 UTC on the 26th and
0646 to 1713 UTC on the 27th.
Losing the October weekend cost the group planned operations on 50,
432, and 1296 MHz. The dish is part of the Algonquin Space Complex
in Toronto.

''Getting Started in VHF,'' a video introduction to operating on the
Amateur Radio VHF frequency bands and produced by CQ Communications,
has won a Silver Hugo Award from ''INTERCOM '94,'' the International
Communication Film and Video Festival.
The video was honored in the competition's ''Educational -- Adult
Audience'' category, CQ said in a press release.
Festival director Michael J. Kutza said that ''there was a
substantial increase in the number of entries this year and
competition was more intense than ever.'' This was INTERCOM's 30th
annual film and video competition.
''Getting Started in VHF'' is intended both for new hams and for more
experienced amateurs who are trying VHF operating for the first
time, CQ said. The program was written, produced and directed by
Richard S. Moseson, NW2L, executive producer of the CQ Video
Library, and ARRL Northern New Jersey Section Manager.
''Getting Started in VHF'' is the second CQ video to win an award.
Earlier this year, ''Ham Radio Horizons,'' an introduction to Amateur
Radio, received a bronze CINDY award from the Association of Visual
Communicators, and it was a finalist in the International Television
Association's (ITVA) New Jersey Awards competition.

Don't jump to conclusions. To non-hams, anyone who talks on a radio is a
"CBer". The neighbor could be a ham, although I would expect a ham to be
a bit more co-operative with a RFI problem. There are some "ham jerks"
running around too, unfortunately.

is current for interval 12-14 October. Ionosphere became depressed
again after dawn this morning. (Less severe depressions of 10-15% were
observed at Townsville after 22UT.) Due to the apparent strong
ionospheric response to any geomagnetic activity, fair to poor HF
conditions are now expected over the next 3-4 days as an increase in
geomagnetic activity is expected due to a coronal hole.

Subject: Ten Tec kit update
Just got off the phone with Ten Tec, and here is the latest news:
1200 2M Amp - sold out first two production runs - should ship in a few weeks
1220 2M mobile rig - New firmware, more memories, sometime in December!
1253 9 band SW rx - In prototype - should be out in 6 weeks (right...)
In stock:
1000A, 1000B, 1000C boxes with hardware
1001 RF preamp
1050 BFO
1051 Transmatch tuner
1054 4 band regen. SW rx
1059 3M fox transmitter
1060 9 position electronic selector switch
1061 6M to 10M rx converter
1064 smart squelch
1201 desk mike
1203 dummy load
1206 hand mike
1207 variable capacitor
1225 G5RV
1550 audio amp
1551 speech processor
1552, 1553 ??? (not in my catalog)
No word on the 6M transverter (but it probably is just sold out). The
Argo RF deck was cancelled a while ago.
Why is it that the items that I am interested in are always the last ones
available? I have had to stop recommending Ten Tec kits to my club members
because of their poor shipping history (2 kits ordered, each time I call
they quote another 6-8 wks delivery time). I have never seen one of their
kits, so I can't say anything about their quality, just their marketing...
I guess they don't realize how much this is hurting them.

Too bad you are bad mouthing TKits when you haven't even seen one.
I have two of the little audio amps. Very nice. My six meter

were printing the manual and would ship the first ones in about 2 weeks.

Well I used to do stuff like that until somebody on 2 mtr got mad.
now I am usually neve on 2 mtr and I am working on upgrading to geral, and
advancved and wish to have it done by DEC this year.
Over all I almost always have my radio on and never identify..
I do not know if my gp300 does it but I can say my radio never get keyed even
when I am not there by doing a radio check on my radio looking for it to key
up, after they tried to beep me... ( on the coolness of Motorola )
I will usually only key up when I feel like talking even if it is just to
say N9SRW portable...
I would say do the same thing with your self most if not all chicago
systems are quiet unless somebody wants to talk to anybody else. Do as you
wish because a random key up like that can bring others in that are passing
through your area.
Now some of you maybe saying HUGH how does the radio get keyed if
you are not there.. It is a motorola thing my radio IDs in MDC, and the
person who called me did a remote on my radio and will identify for the
transmisson as if using a remote base. That in a nut shell is a select call
demanding an ACK.
If you are ever in Indiana say Gary to about 20 miles east
to about Milwaukee Wi if you here teh system active feel free to say hello.
If the system is quite wait a bit until somebody keys it up, it is a semi
closed system.. when it is sleeping you need MDC to wake it up for 2mins.
If not it will ignore you. And it is a benevolent(sp) dictator ship.

I couldn't agree with you more...CW Contests and listening to the lower

upgraded...What do you know...Within 2 months I had overcome my code barrier...

Well Dave...I just recieved a brochure from K-40 electronics division
and they have come out with a little device that is retrofitted in a
license plate...they say if you get a ticket by laser then they will
send you a check for DOUBLE the amount...they also state that it is
100% legal in all 50 states...and sugg. retail price is $199.99, kinda
sounds neat-o to get on and figure out how it does it...

I'm pretty sure you cant transmit light of the appropriate
frequency/pulse duration or coherency to turn all of the traffic lights
green like emergency vehicles do. Or can you?
